Are you familiar with the situation? With great enthusiasm, you bought the first height-adjustable desk of your life. On the first day he stood up proudly and said “I’m going to be healthy now”. But after 40 minutes, a dull, burning sensation started to spread from his heels up his calves and into his waist.
Finally, he had to sit down and thought with disappointment, “Maybe this standing job is not for me?”
As an expert, I can reassure you: It’s not you, and it’s not the table. The problem is that you have left out the third most important element of the system: what’s under your feet.
The Hard Floor Curse
Whether it’s parquet, laminate or tiled, home office floors are hard as concrete. When you stand on it, your body instinctively “freezes”:
- Your muscles tense to keep your balance.
- The blood circulation in your leg slows down (that’s why your ankle swells).
- Your entire body weight is on your heel bone.
It’s like trying to run a marathon on asphalt without running shoes. No wonder it hurts.
What is an “Anti-Fatigue Mat”?
Many people think that a yoga mat or a soft Persian mat will do. Wrong. An ergonomic mat (anti-fatigue mat) is a special high-density foam device designed specifically for standing work.
The Secret: Micromovements
The point of a carpet is not just that it is “soft”. It’s about instability – but only just.
“When you stand on an ergonomic mat, the material underneath your feet is constantly bouncing. This forces your foot muscles to make small, imperceptible corrections (micromovements) every second.”
This continuous muscle work pumps blood back to the heart. This prevents varicose veins, leg swelling and, most importantly, waist fatigue.
3 Reasons Why It’s Obligatory to Put Pieces by the Table
1. 50% Longer Standing
Research shows that with the right support, the pain threshold is extended. If you have had to sit down after 30 minutes, you can stand for 60-90 minutes without being noticed with a mat.
2. Protects your Joints (Knees and Hips)
The shocks of a hard floor are absorbed by your discs. The carpet, on the other hand, acts as a shock absorber. It feels like you’re walking on clouds.
3. Feeling hot (Especially for women!)
Laminate flooring radiates cold from below. If your feet are cold, your body will cramp. Ergonomic carpet is an excellent insulator, so you can even work on it in socks in winter.
Shoes or Socks? How to Use?
This is my favourite part: the ergonomic carpet gives you the freedom of “shoeless” freedom. It works best when you stand on it in socks (or barefoot).
Why? Because the sole of the shoe is stiff and “turns off” the sole muscles. When you take the shoes off, you can grip the soft surface with your toes, move your arches and get a real workout – without even noticing.
Summary: An investment that can be felt immediately
The adjustable table is the “body”, but the ergonomic carpet is the “shock absorber”. The two really work together.
If you notice that you are lifting your desk less and less because you “don’t feel like it”, don’t blame the desk. Try a rug – I guarantee you’ll get your enthusiasm back.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is a yoga mat good instead?
Unfortunately, no. A yoga mat is too thin and too soft (it gets soaked). A standing mat is thicker (1.5-2 cm) and made of a more flexible material that “kicks back” to stimulate circulation.
How to clean it?
Very simple. Because the surface is sealed (water-repellent), it can be cleaned with a damp cloth or vacuum cleaner in seconds. It does not absorb dust like textile carpets.
Can you roll on it with a chair?
Not recommended. Although quality carpets are hard-wearing, the weight of a wheelchair can permanently deform the foam and make it difficult to roll on. When you sit down, simply kick the mat under the table with one leg movement, and when you stand up, pull it back up. It’s light as fluff.
